How to Make Cold Brew in a French Press

Cold brew french press

Your French press is secretly a great cold brew maker. Coarse coffee steeps in cold water overnight, and the plunger filters it in seconds. The result is a smooth, chocolatey, low-acid concentrate that keeps in the fridge for a week.

Here is the cold brew French press method we use.

The Short Answer

Stir 85 g (about 1 cup) of coarsely ground coffee into 680 g (about 3 cups) of cold, filtered water, a 1:8 ratio. Cover and refrigerate for 12 to 18 hours. Press slowly, pour into a jar, and dilute 1:1 with water or milk over ice.

What You Need

Step by Step

Step 1: Grind coarse

Grind 85 g of beans very coarse.

Step 2: Combine

Add the coffee to the press, pour in 680 g of cold water, and stir so every ground is wet.

Step 3: Steep cold

Set the lid on without pressing and refrigerate for 12 to 18 hours.

Step 4: Press and store

Press slowly, pour the concentrate into a clean jar, and refrigerate for up to 7 days.

Step 5: Serve

Mix equal parts concentrate and water or milk over ice.

Tips for Smoother Cold Brew

  • Double filter through a paper filter for an ultra-clean cup.
  • Medium and dark roasts give the chocolatey flavor most people love.
  • Steeping longer than 20 hours can taste woody.
  • Freeze leftover cold brew in ice cube trays so iced coffee never gets watery.
