How to Froth Milk at Home (Frother, Jar or Whisk)

How to froth milk

You do not need an espresso machine to make cafe-style foam. Here is how to froth milk at home with a handheld frother, a jar, or even a whisk, plus which milks foam best and the right temperature.

The Short Answer

Heat milk to about 140 to 150°F (steaming, not boiling), then froth with a handheld frother for 15 to 30 seconds, tilting the cup, until it doubles in volume. Whole milk makes the creamiest foam; oat barista milk is the best dairy-free option.

Method 1: Handheld Frother

  1. Heat 1/2 cup milk in the microwave or on the stove to 140 to 150°F.
  2. Pour into a tall mug, filling no more than one-third.
  3. Submerge a rechargeable handheld frother just below the surface, then turn it on.
  4. Froth 15 to 30 seconds, moving up and down, until doubled.
  5. Tap the mug on the counter to pop big bubbles.

Method 2: Jar

Fill a jar one-third with cold milk, close tightly and shake hard for 30 to 60 seconds. Remove the lid and microwave 30 seconds to stabilize the foam.

Method 3: Whisk or French Press

Whisk hot milk vigorously in a small pot for 1 to 2 minutes, or pump hot milk in a French press 15 to 20 times until foamy.
