What Size Crockpot Do I Need? (Size Guide)

6 quart crock pot

Choosing a slow cooker comes down to one question: how many people are you feeding, and what will you cook most? This crockpot size guide covers everything from mini 1.5-quart models to 8-quart family cookers, and explains why the 6 quart crock pot is the size most recipes, including ours, are written for.

The Short Answer

For most families of 3 to 5, a 6-quart slow cooker is the best size. It fits a 3 to 4 lb roast, a whole chicken, and a full batch of soup or chili. Choose 2 to 3 quarts for 1 or 2 people and 7 to 8 quarts for large families or batch cooking.

Slow Cooker Size Chart

Size Feeds Best for
1.5 to 2 qt 1 to 2 Dips, sides, oatmeal
3 to 4 qt 2 to 3 Small roasts, meals for two, soups
5 to 6 qt 4 to 6 Most recipes: roasts, whole chicken, chili, stews
7 to 8 qt 6 to 10 Large families, turkey breast, batch cooking, parties

Why the 6-Quart Crock Pot Is the Most Popular

Most slow cooker recipes, including every recipe on this site unless noted, are tested in a 6-quart cooker. It is large enough for a chuck roast with vegetables or a full pot of chili, but small enough that a family-size recipe still fills it at least halfway, which is what slow cookers need to cook evenly.

Oval vs Round

  • Oval: best for roasts, whole chickens, turkey breast, brisket and lasagna.
  • Round: fine for soups, stews, chili and dips, and usually cheaper.

How Full Should a Slow Cooker Be?

Fill your slow cooker between half and two-thirds full. Too little food can overcook or scorch, and too much may not heat up quickly enough to stay out of the unsafe temperature zone. If you are cooking a small recipe in a large crock, check it early.

Features Worth Paying For

  • Programmable timer that switches to WARM automatically.
  • Locking lid for carrying food to potlucks.
  • Removable, dishwasher-safe insert.
  • Built-in temperature probe on some models, useful for roasts.
