Why You Will Love This Crockpot Apple Butter

  • No constant stirring. The slow cooker cooks it gently without scorching.
  • Deep caramel flavor. Long cooking darkens the apples naturally.
  • Great for gifts. One batch fills about 6 half-pint jars.
  • Easy to adjust sweetness. Add sugar to taste at the end.

Ingredients for Crockpot Apple Butter

  • Apples: 6 lb (2.7 kg), about 18 medium. Use a mix of sweet and tart, such as Honeycrisp, Gala, Fuji and Granny Smith.
  • Sugar: Brown sugar gives a molasses flavor. Start with the amount below and add more after blending if you like it sweeter.
  • Spices: Cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and a little salt.

How to Make Crockpot Apple Butter

Step 1: Fill the crock

Add the apples to a 6-quart slow cooker. Sprinkle with the sugars, spices, salt and lemon juice and toss. It will look very full; the apples cook down a lot.

Step 2: Slow cook

Cover and cook on LOW for 10 hours, until the apples are very soft and dark.

Step 3: Blend

Stir in the vanilla and blend until smooth with an immersion blender (or in batches in a blender, venting the lid).

Step 4: Thicken

Cook uncovered on HIGH for 1 to 2 hours, stirring occasionally, until thick. A spoonful on a cold plate should hold its shape without watery edges.

Step 5: Jar it

Cool, then spoon into clean jars and refrigerate.

Tips for the Best Crockpot Apple Butter

  • Mix apple varieties. Tart apples add brightness; sweet apples need less sugar.
  • Peeling is optional. Skins add color and natural pectin if you blend very well.
  • Prop the lid. For faster thickening, cook the last hours with the lid slightly open using a wooden spoon.
  • Check for doneness. It is ready when it mounds on a spoon and no liquid separates.

What to Serve with Crockpot Apple Butter

Spread on toast, biscuits or pancakes, stir into yogurt or oatmeal, or serve on a cheese board with sharp cheddar.

Easy Variations

  • Pumpkin apple butter. Stir in 1 cup pumpkin puree before thickening.
  • Less sugar. Use 1/2 cup brown sugar and very sweet apples.
  • Chai spiced. Add 1/2 tsp cardamom and 1/2 tsp ginger.
  • Maple. Replace the granulated sugar with maple syrup.

How to Store and Reheat

Refrigerate in clean airtight jars for up to 3 weeks, or freeze for up to 1 year (leave 1/2 inch headspace).

For shelf-stable canning, follow a tested water-bath process from the National Center for Home Food Preservation.

Crockpot Apple Butter FAQ

Do you have to peel apples for crockpot apple butter?

No. Unpeeled apples work if you blend thoroughly, and the skins add color and natural pectin. Peeled apples give the smoothest texture.

Put a spoonful on a cold plate. If no liquid separates around the edge and it holds its shape, it is done.

Why is my apple butter runny?

It needs more time uncovered. Cook on HIGH with the lid off or propped open, stirring every 30 minutes.

How long does homemade apple butter last?

About 3 weeks in the refrigerator or up to 1 year in the freezer.
